Drunken Prayer: Biography

We're in the band

Drunken Prayer is the brainchild of Morgan Christopher Geer of Asheville, NC.

Wood-shedding on a farm in Northern California, Morgan and former DP keyboardist Miss Audra Fleming wrote and arranged compositions for what would become Drunken Prayer, the band they formed upon their re-location to Portland, OR. Others in the current fold include Joel Meredith of Blind Pilot on steel guitar and, on loan from The Breeders, percussionist Jose Medeles.

The couple met in Asheville, NC where Audra, on piano, joined Morgan's psychedelic country band, The Unholy Trio. That group also featured members of The Reigning Sound and Freakwater. The Bloodshot Records' 5th Year Anniversary compilation featured the group's devilish version of Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise".

Morgan Christopher Geer was born in San Francisco, the son of a New Orleans folk singer and raised in the hills of Western North Carolina. He has a dynamic and charismatic stage presence: equal parts Tom Waits crooner and Gibby Haynes carnival barker. Geer delivers challenging lyrics with a dry wit à la Warren Zevon, punctuated with whispers and shouts.

Drunken Prayer's music is a folksy mix of blues, country and pop; traditional arrangements, often violently dynamic and always with "an almost inculpable sincerity ". This provides for what can be an unsettling backdrop for rakish, playful stories of big-picture themes. Familiar territory, mainstream it is not.
